How Paulo Malo Revolutionised Dental Implants with All-on-4®

Every year, millions of Australians suffer tooth loss due to gum disease, injury or decay. A staggering 51% of all tooth loss was in those aged 55–74 years old from periodontitis, an advanced form of gum disease.

Historically, the only treatment available was dentures, but today for anyone who has lost or failed teeth, developments in dental implant technology mean a confident and natural-looking smile.

Discover how revolutionary improvements in dental implant technology have taken this treatment to the next level with a world-renowned dentist, Professor Paulo Malo.

What Were The Beginnings of The Original Dental Implant?

The origins of titanium implants began in earnest during the 1950s when Swedish professor Per-Ingvar Brånemar discovered that the human body has the great ability to fuse with titanium.

Changing the course of dentistry forever, Professor Brånemar established the process known as osseointegration. Osseointegration is defined as the direct structural and functional connection between the living bone and the surface of a load-bearing implant.

Titanium is the metal of choice due to its surface roughness and energy, superior mechanical properties, biocompatibility and excellent ability to fuse with human tissue; osseointegration.

Ongoing research

His profound findings were backed up by ongoing research of patients who had implants using this method over their first year and followed up five years later.

This research reported an effective implant success rate of 96.5%.

This staggering success was a profound development, and its overwhelming patient impact changed the course of dentistry as we know it.

So, where does Portuguese Professor Paulo Malo fit into these innovative developments in the dental implant procedure?

Professor Paulo Malo

Who is Professor Paulo Malo?

Born In the previous overseas territory of Portuguese Angola, Paulo Malo moved to Portugal in the 1960s to study dental medicine in the country’s capital, Lisbon.

It was at the University of Lisbon and from the Faculty of Dental Medicine where he received his graduate degree in 1989.

Together with distinguished clinical research and a medical team, he began developing the innovative All-on-4® method for dental implants practised in a series of eminent dental clinics across Australia and worldwide.

The broader medical community has recognised this cutting-edge method as one of the most significant developments in the entire sector of implant dentistry.

Building on his success and growth in developmental dentistry, in 1995, Malo founded the Malo Clinic in Portugal, which became the flagship of a successful international healthcare group. Its growing presence is felt across the continents, from Portugal to China, Israel and the USA.

Dentistry breakthroughs

Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards and distinctions for his breakthroughs in dentistry along with a range of products and techniques, such as The NobelSpeedy™ implant and the All-on-4® method.

This, alongside his healthcare and wellness entrepreneurial skills, leadership and management skills, has been widely reported internationally and in the Portuguese media.

Professor Malo Developed Dental Implants with The Inception of the All-on-4® Method

Implant manufacturer Nobel Biocare AB of Gothenburg, Sweden, was among the first to be inspired and discovered the tremendous value of the All-on-4® technique.

Nobel Biocare originated in 1978 as a partnership between the founder of modern implant technology. The partners were Swedish medical researcher Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark and Bofors, a Swedish former arms company. Their collaboration began to automate and industrialise his original osseointegration findings.

The company funded research and studies by Paulo Malo to uncover the effectiveness of this method, at which time many other clinicians around the world were also using it.

Professor Paulo Malo and Nobel Biocare

By the 1990s, Professor Malo and Nobel Biocare were making huge developments on Branemark’s original discoveries.

This led to the development of the All-on-4® treatment concept. This innovative implant method meant two posterior implants could be tilted at a 45-degree angle to avoid parts of the jawbone that are of poor quality.

The pinnacle moment where all the research came to fruition was in 1998 when Professor Malo used what is now recognised as the gold standard of full-arch teeth replacement and was performed on the first-ever patient.

This breakthrough led to the expertise of Professor Malo being highly sought after and led to a series of restorative dentist publications and leading teams of dental professionals in Australia and all around the world.
